The City of Paola (5,600) is currently seeking a law enforcement professional to fill the critical and highly visible position of Police Chief.  The current Chief is retiring after 27 years of service.

Paola is located 30 minutes south of Olathe, Kansas and the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area.  The Paola Police Department has a current budget of $1.6 million and a staff of 16 sworn officers and 6 civilian employees.
 

Job Description:  This position will serve as a Department Head reporting directly to the City Manager.  The Chief will support the City Manager and City Council in maintaining the ideal balance between quality of life services and a strong economic foundation in our community.  This is an excellent opportunity for implementation of long-term strategic planning; to further develop community policing; and to be a program innovator while providing optimal public safety service.  The incumbent will directly supervise the operation of the Paola Police Department, formulate, recommend and implement public safety services, policies, procedures, plans, and  will have budgetary responsibility for departmental operations.   As a member of the City’s senior management team this position requires the ability and willingness to provide advice and counsel to the City Manager regarding strategic policy and problem-solving relating to the Police Department and the City. Candidate Requirements:  Candidates for the position should possess demonstrated  leadership skills, high integrity, and proven success in problem-solving policing methods, data-driven methodologies and department level financial management.  This position requires the ability to lead by example, possess the ability to build working relationships with the Police Department employees, City Department Heads, City Staff and to establish successful working relationships with members of the community, the school district, the county and regional law enforcement agencies.

Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field; a minimum of 10 years of experience in law enforcement and a minimum of 5 years supervisory experience.  In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree the following experience will be deemed eligible for consideration: Fifteen years of experience in police work as a certified officer with a minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience in law enforcement within a municipality.  

Employment Requirements:  Candidates will be subject to a complete background investigation.  Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause applicant rejection from consideration.  Candidates must take and pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical examination.   Candidates must possess KLETC certification and valid Kansas driver’s license or ability to obtain.  The successful candidate will have 6 months to establish a permanent residence within a 30 minute response time from the Paola Police Department.

This position has a salary range of $56,098 to $86,008 with an excellent benefit package.  Salary at appointment is dependent on qualifications.

The Paola Police Department is soliciting highly motivated individuals for the full-time position of police officer.  The City of Paola is located 18 miles south of Olathe, Kansas and the greater Kansas City metropolitan area.  The Paola Police Department consists of 16 sworn officers and 6 civilian employees as well as its own communications center.  Those selected to fill open positions will be enforcing local, state, and federal laws, as well as investigating crimes, enforcing traffic regulations, investigating traffic accidents, assisting the public, and serving a department that takes pride in serving its community. State Certified Officers are preferred, but Police Academy training will be provided. 

Type:
Full Time.

Salary:
Starting salary for certified officers is 35,360 to $38,860, per year, depending on qualifications.  Other benefits include sick, vacation, and personal leave, furnished uniforms and equipment, health, dental, life insurance plans and KP&F retirement.

Minimum Requirements: 
 Must be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, good physical condition, no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions or domestic violence convictions, must possess a high school or GED diploma, and must be a US citizen.  Must be able to pass a written and oral board examination, drug screen, physical fitness, physical exam, and psychological exam. Certified Law Enforcement applicants must not have any Brady/Giglio material in background to be eligible for hiring. Candidate must reside within a 30 minute response time within 6 months of hire.
